Yosemite National Park

Half Dome Trail

Conquered Yosemite’s legendary Half Dome Trail, definitely one of the toughest trails in any national park. 17 miles round trip w/ an elevation gain of 5000ft, I probably couldn’t make it to the top without the support of my girlfriend. It is an extremely difficult hike.

Here are some tips for you guys if you want to take the challenge in the future:

1. Start the hike early and bring flashlight, so you don’t get stuck in the forest after dark. We started at 7:30am and got back at 7pm.

2. Bring enough food and water, at least half gallon of water/person.

3. Bring gloves and wear hiking shoes because you will need to climb the cables at the end, and the cables can be very dangerous, more than 10 people died here.

4. Work on your leg strength before you go, it will make the hike easier.

To sum up, Half Dome is a spectacular hike, full of water falls, quite forests and breath taking views. Hiking this Yosemite icon is an extraordinary accomplishment and can create a memory of lifetime.

Below are what to expect along this amazing trail:

Oakhurst, CA

Oakhurst is a little town located at Madera County, California. If you can’t find any lodge to stay within the National Park, you can plan to stay here the night before your hike, but remember there is still a 30-min drive from here to the Half Dome trail, so leave early in the morning.

Yosemite Valley

Here you can find the visitor center. You can obtain your map and talk to the rangers. The ranger will help you to plan your trips and also give you safety guidelines.

Nevada Fall

After the Mist Trail, you will reach the top of the Nevada Fall. This is already considered as a tough day hike. However, this is only half way through the Half Dome Trail.

The Cable

The legendary Half Dome Cable, things to remember:

1: Wear gloves, the cable can be slippery and the gloves will also protect your hands.

2: The cable can be extremely dangerous during storms, so check the weather before you go. If the weather is cloudy or raining lightly during your hike, wait for the weather to clear or start heading back.

3: Just some statistics, since 1971 there have been nine falls on the cable and three of them were fatal.
